Daily Fishing Report Steelhead Alley 3/31

This morning is setting up to be one of the best fishing windows we’ve had since last week’s blowout. Across most Northeast Ohio rivers and creeks, flows have finally settled into a very fishable range, holding steady and continuing to drop slowly overnight.

From west to east, most rivers should fish well today, especially the smaller and medium-sized systems that recover quickly after a rise. The main exceptions will be the larger tributaries like the Grand, Cuyahoga, and Vermilion, which typically take longer to clear and drop after a significant weather event.

I spent yesterday on Rocky River and saw a lot of encouraging fish movement throughout the day. There were definitely fresh steelhead pushing through, and I was able to land a couple myself, which is always a great sign heading into the next morning’s conditions.

One of the key producers for me yesterday was chartreuse beads. With the water still carrying a slight stain, that color really stood out and consistently got attention from active fish.

Another interesting sign of the season is that a few smallmouth bass are starting to show up in the mix as well. As water temperatures continue to climb, this is right on schedule, with fish beginning to stage ahead of their upcoming spawning period.

Right now, water conditions are close to ideal in many stretches, and this setup should hold through at least the afternoon hours.

The one thing to watch is the weather over the next 72 hours. Rain is expected to move across the Steelhead Alley region over the next three days, so anglers planning to get out should be prepared with rain gear and keep an eye on river gauges. Depending on totals, this next push of rain could quickly change clarity and flow conditions.

For now, this feels like one of those classic “get out while it’s good” mornings before the next weather system changes the rivers again.
