Daily Fishing Report Steelhead Alley 3/24
The shot of rain and wet snow earlier this week did exactly what we needed. Rocky and the Chagrin both came up with a nice push of water and are settling into really good shape—good color, solid flow, and very fishable levels. Those systems tend to fish best with a little extra water, and right now they’re right in that window where fish are spread out and willing to move.
The Grand is continuing to come together and has honestly been the most consistent option. Even when it had some mud in it, guys were still catching fish consistently . As it drops and cleans up, it’s only getting better—there’s good numbers of fish throughout the system now, not just in the usual spots.
A lot of the smaller tribs didn’t get hit nearly as hard, so they’ve stayed lower and clearer. That can be a plus if you’re looking for more technical water, but you’ll need to dial things back with lighter presentations.
Water temps are back over that 40° mark, which is a big deal. Fish are definitely more active again—moving more, holding in better spots, and actually feeding instead of just sitting. With the slight warm-up coming tomorrow into Thursday, expect that trend to continue before things level back off with the next cooldown.
As far as what’s working, it’s hard to beat spawn right now. There are plenty of natural eggs in the system with fish doing their thing, so sacs and beads are getting a lot of attention. Matching size and color to the water clarity has been key—brighter in the stain, more natural in clear water. That said, it’s not a one-trick deal. Jigs under a float are producing, especially tipped or fished clean, and guys swinging or stripping streamers are still hooking up, especially in the deeper, slower water. Even spoons and spinners have been moving fish when you can get them in front of the right ones.
Overall, it’s shaping up to be a really solid stretch of fishing—good water, active fish, and plenty of options depending on how you like to fish.
